Beyond the Flames:
Why Woodstock Needs You (And You Need Us)
When people hear "Volunteer Firefighter," a specific image usually springs to mind: someone decked out in firefighting gear, charging bravely into a burning building to save the day.
While that is certainly part of what we do, it is only a fraction of the story.
I want to pull back the curtain on what it really means to serve our department. If you have ever thought, "I could never run into a fire, so I can't help," I am here to tell you that there is a place for you here.
It’s Not Just About Fighting Fires
There is a misconception that if you join the fire department, you must be ready to face an inferno. The reality is that a modern volunteer fire service requires a diverse team with a wide range of skills to function effectively. We need people who are organized, people who love their community, and people who just want to lend a hand.
We have crucial roles that never require you to enter a burning building, including:
Community Events: Helping run our Open Houses, Touch a Truck, Trunk or Treat and the Woodstock Fair to name a few.
Administrative Support: Assisting with the "business" side of the firehouse, from data entry, record management, to helping manage the staff side of operations.
Grant Writing: This is vital for securing the funding we need for new equipment and training.
Exterior Firefighting: Supporting the interior crews from the outside by managing hoses, water sources, and tools.
Traffic Control & Scene Safety: Keeping the public and our crew safe during incidents.
Why I Answered the Call
I didn't join the fire service because I was looking for adrenaline. My journey began in 1990, born out of a moment of helplessness.
I stood by and watched as my neighbor's house burned down. I wasn't trained, I didn't have gear, and I couldn't do anything to stop the devastation. That feeling of inability of wanting to help but not knowing how stuck with me. I decided then and there that I wanted to make a tangible difference in my community. I never wanted to feel helpless in the face of an emergency again.
That decision was one of the best decisions I have made in the last three decades of my life.
The Benefits of Volunteering
Volunteering for the WVFA isn't just a donation of your time; it is an investment in your life and your town. When you join us, you gain:
A Second Family: The camaraderie in the fire service is unlike anything else. You build bonds with your neighbors that last a lifetime.
New Skills: From first aid and CPR to leadership and logistics, you learn skills that are valuable in every aspect of life.
Pride of Ownership: There is a profound sense of pride in knowing that you are protecting the people and places you love in your community of Woodstock.
Community Connection: You stop being just a resident and start being a pillar of the community.
Find Your Place With Us
Woodstock relies on volunteers. We are your family, friends and neighbors. Whether you want to hold a nozzle, write a grant, or hand out candy at Trunk-or-Treat, we need you.
This New Year’s, if you are looking for a change, looking to make a difference, want to help your community, neighbors and friends. We would love to hear from you.
Don't let the fear of the unknown stop you. If you have the heart to serve, we have a uniform that fits.
Happy New Year!!!
